The Vargus (戦闘属領兵, Varugusu?) were the former warrior-class slaves of the Giadian Empire stationed in the combat zones on the Empire's old borders. They were given the moniker of Beastmen, as they were similar to the people of old that were driven out of villages and treated as wolves. The Vargus bear that moniker with pride. Brent Bernholdt, one of the Vargus, describes the Vargus as disloyal outcasts abandoned on the outskirts of the Empire. As they had been used to wage war for centuries, the Vargus are heavily steeped in warrior culture. One of the races considered to be part of the Vargus are the Eisen (黒鉄種 Aizen?).
The Vargus were generally left alone by the former Empire, save for wartime where they were recruited en masse. As they did not hold citizenship, they were exempt from taxation and were not used as serfs for production. They were even given special provisions by the Empire regardless of peace or wartime to keep them obedient.[1] The Vargus didn't necessarily dislike this agreement, as although they were treated as outcasts by the regular citizens and the government, they could continue to live according to their own culture. The Vargus believe that a peaceful death is shameful, and conversely wish to fight until they meet their demise.
Due to the stigma of the Vargus being ferocious beasts, they were not given citizenship by the newly established Federal Republic of Giad, although they did retain their right to residency.[1] They are not allowed to enter officer academies, as such they would only be allowed to be promoted up to the highest noncommissioned officer rank: Master Sergeant. It is unknown whether they are allowed to be given a warrant and be promoted to Warrant Officer. Vargus combatants are seen as mercenary forces by the Federacy's military.[1]
The Vargus are generally the only Giadian combatants capable of fighting effectively with the Eighty-Six. Both groups are unorthodox forces within the Federacy's employ, sharing similarities in their lack of formality, as well as the ability to charge straight into suicidal missions without complaint.
