The Old Nan (ババア Baba?), also known as The Old Lady as referred to by Raiden Shuga, is a minor supporting character in the 86 -Eighty Six- series.
She was Raiden's caretaker during his youth in the Ninth Sector during the start of the war, and prior to his conscription to become an Processor.[2]
Appearance[]
The Old Nan is an elderly woman with the silver eyes and hair of an Alba. In the manga, she is depicted to wear a headscarf.[3]
Personality[]
She is described as a kind woman who had a fondness for children of any race, as she didn't share any of the racial sentiments of the Alba majority. She has been described by Raiden as usually sweet, but when he and the orphans were taken, The Old Nan cursed out the soldiers who took the children, with a hatred that Raiden never saw from her before.
Background[]
Her upbringing is largely unknown, however at some point in time she ran an orphanage from an abandoned boarding school in the Ninth Sector located in the Republic of San Magnolia during the start of the Legion War. For five years, she sheltered Colorota children, including a young Raiden Shuuga, where they avoided being sent to the concentration camps. The Old Nan also gave them an education in her orphanage. Her teachings and shelter were the reasons why Raiden didn’t rely solely on pride, compared to most of the other Eighty-Six. However, they were eventually discovered when someone exposed them to the authorities. The Old Nan pleaded and protested against their deportation, to no avail. As the children were sent away, she cursed out the soldiers with an intense hatred.
Abilities[]
As she was able to give the children under her care an education, it is implied that she is able to teach and work with children, a skill that later proved to be useful when she was assigned to the Eighty-Sixth Strike Package as a civilian instructor.

Relationships[]
Raiden Shuga[]
She was Raiden’s caretaker during the start of the war. Raiden reminisces of her fondly, and used her as an example of a ‘’good Alba’’ when talking to Lena. He received an education from her, and it was because of her that Raiden was not as deep into the mentality that the majority of the Eighty-Six carried of only having pride. The Old Nan showed immense hatred when he and the other children were taken by the soldiers to become Processors.
They eventually reunited when she joined the Eighty-Sixth Strike Package as a civilian instructor. Raiden was glad to see her again.
