The Continent (大陸, Tairiku?) is the setting where 86 -Eighty Six- takes place. The Continent can be divided into three subcontinents, all of which mostly experience the seasons of the northern hemisphere. The seas around the Continent are teeming with Leviathans, barring humanity from exploring the rest of the world.

Geography[]

West[]

The West (西方, Seihou?) is the primary location of the story, consisting of seven named active nations, one undefined location, and unnamed smaller states in the west. The races originating from the West are referred to as the Vespertina.

  • The southern coast, the location of the southern coastal countries, including Elektra and the Grand Duchy of Qitira,[1] is separated from the rest of the continent by Mount Wyrmnest (ヴルムネスト山, Vurumunesutosan?) and its mountain range. Nestled within that same mountain range is the Alliance of Wald. It is said that coffee beans and mango trees grow in the south,[2] and that the sea off the southern coast was colorful (possibly coral),[3] implying the possibility of a tropical environment.
  • Vast plains, forests, and wetlands stretching latitudinally can be found north of Wyrmnest. They are occupied by the Republic of San Magnolia and the Federal Republic of Giad, formerly the Giadian Empire.
  • In the northwestern tip of the continent lies the Severed Head Peninsula (断首半島, Danshu Hantou?) or Blank Sector (白紙地帯. Hakushi Chitai?), a volcanic region nearest to the Holy Theocracy of Noiryanaruse and the far-western countries.[3]
  • The northern coast is similarly divided from the plains by the Dragon Corpse Mountain Range (竜骸山脈, Ryuumukuro Sanmyaku?), located within the territory of the United Kingdom of Roa Gracia. To the east of the United Kingdom lies the Regicide Fleet Countries.

Hammada Dessert[]

The Hammada Desert (岩石砂漠, Gansekisabaku?) separates the West from the Far East, largely controlled by the Rin-Liu Trade Federation. It is the likely place of origin of the Deseria.[4] Little is currently known about the Hammada Desert.

Far East[]

The Far East (極東, Kyokutou?) is the place of origin of the Orienta. Little is currently known about the Far East.

South[]

There have been allusions to another potential subcontinent in the South (南方, Nanpou?), home to cheetahs and the likely place of origin of the Meridiana.[5][6] However, considering that the southern coast is dominated by the Veridia,[7] there is a possibility that it is an altogether different continent.

Governments[]

Republic of San Magnolia[]

Main Article: Republic of San Magnolia

The Republic of San Magnolia was once a monarchy ruled over the land's native people, the Alba, and a subset of Alba known as Celena were its nobility. However, over three hundred years ago, in RY 1 (SY 1782), the monarchy was toppled in a democratic revolution led by a woman named San Magnolia and was founded and replaced by the world's first modern democracy, the Republic named in honor of her sacrifice. Despite successfully transitioning to a democracy, the country did not change much as a society at all, with many of the former noble families surviving and going on to take up high-ranking positions within the new Republic. Due to the majority Alba population usually holding higher positions than the minority Colorata immigrants, evolved into a belief that the Alba are the superior race.

After a decade of government-sponsored education and propaganda, the vast majority of Republic's citizens had become firm believers of Alba Supremacy. The consequences of Alba Supremacism led to the Republic's hampered scientific progress, as them already considering themselves "superior" caused them to begin lagging behind other nations due to having no real drive or incentive to innovate. As a result, the Republic's armed forces were decimated in half a month, leading to the evacuation of Republic citizens into the Eighty-Five Sectors and the enactment of the Special Wartime Peace Preservation Act, Presidential Order #6609 in which the Colorata were relocated outside of the Eighty-Five Sectors into the nonexistent Eighty-Sixth Sector. Now known as the Eighty-Six, they were forced to build the Gran Mur around the Eighty-Five Sectors and conscripted to fight against the Legion. In the Legion War's large-scale offensive, the government was too late to realize the severity of the situation, where the Legion had already invaded the Eighty-Fifth Sector.

Two months after forming their defensive line, the Republic of San Magnolia was rescued by the forces of the Federacy and multinational coalition. As the truth of their oppressive regime came to light, the Republic was given the minimum amount of humanitarian aid for their survival, while the Eighty-Six made up the focus of the Federacy's care. As part of the Federacy's occupation, the Republic's government was disbanded and a puppet administration—controlled by the Federacy—was established. The Interim Government still believe that the Alba had established the greatest form of government; a system wherein the superior race stands above all other races on the continent and blamed the Eighty-Six’s incompetence and treachery for the Republic's downfall. Yvonne Primevére, leader of The Holy Magnolian Order of Pureblood, Pure-White, Patriotic Knights (also known as the Bleachers) had rapidly gathered support from the old Republic’s citizens and built up her position within the interim government. Outraged by effectively having their nation stolen from them and determined to retain the Republic's independence and return to the former status quo, the Bleachers advocated for the return of the Eighty-Six to the Republic and the exit of the Federacy's hand in San Magnolian affairs.

Giadian Empire / Federal Republic of Giad[]

Main Articles: Giadian Empire & Federal Republic of Giad

The Adel-Adler Dynasty were the true rulers of the Giadian Empire until some 200 years ago, when the aristocracy started manipulating the governance of the country from the shadows, turning the Giadian monarchy into puppets who acted as figureheads for the nation. The Empire was composed of many vassal states ruled by nobles. The last known member of the royal family was Empress Augusta Frederica Adel-Adler, who was captured in SY 2144, putting an end to the revolution.

The Federal Republic of Giad was established as a new country and governing body of Giadian territories with Ernst Zimmerman, who led the revolution, acting as Interim President. While the President acted as head of state, it had not established a proper legislative branch yet because of the ongoing war against the Legion. Though seemingly stable on the surface, there is some internal political turmoil within the Federacy's government with two main factions: the pro-democracy faction who seeks to maintain the Federacy led by Ernst, and the faction led by Archduchess Brantolote who has ambitions to reestablish the Giadian Empire with herself as the Empress. This is further fueled by the longtime racial tensions and rivalries between the Onyx and Pyrope nobles. It is assumed that should the Pyrope faction make a move for power, the pro-democracy faction would be backed by the Onyx faction who sided with the peasantry partway through the revolution and whose head, Marquis Seiei Nouzen, aimed to push for democracy before the revolution had even started.

United Kingdom of Roa Gracia[]

Main Article: United Kingdom of Roa Gracia

The United Kingdom of Roa Gracia is the last surviving despotic monarchy on the continent with the Idinarohk line being royal family who have been ruling the country for over a thousand years. The first Idinarohk monarch was an Amethystus known as the mad king. He was said to have apparently used the nation’s treasury for breeding thousands of butterflies, only to kill and display them in an audience chamber. Succession works through several of the King's children vying for the position of succeeding monarch through various achievements, statuses and qualifications, supported by their factions. The Crown Prince Zafar Idinarohk is currently set to be next in line for the throne after his father King "Stanya" Idinarohk passes away or steps down, and is backed by his younger brother Prince Viktor Idinarohk, who's succession rights were revoked and is part of his faction. Among others, Boris Idinarohk and Feodora Idinarohk are also competing for the throne. All members of the Idinarohk bloodline's legal spouses and concubine candidates are decided even before their birth.

Alliance of Wald[]

Main Article: Alliance of Wald

The Alliance of Wald is an allied confederation of states that had split off and gained independence from the Giadan Empire seven hundred years prior. As the nation had split off from the Giadian Empire, they opted to forgo a monarch. Instead, they formed a council of influential figures from each of the Alliance's states. One hundred and sixty years ago, the Alliance granted its citizens voting rights, shifting their council from an oligarchical position to a democratic one. The Alliance was a nation that practiced armed neutrality, the sole exception was when it came to fighting the Legion, a common enemy to all of humanity.

Holy Theocracy of Noiryanaruse[]

Main Article: Holy Theocracy of Noiryanaruse

The Holy Theocracy of Noiryanaruse is a theocratical country and is the leader of the Aurata-native countries in the continent’s far northwest. Noirya is the national religion of the Holy Theocracy. Its doctrine was strictly adhered to, regarded even more highly than the laws of the nation. In this religion, the earth goddess and the fates she governed over are regarded as the absolute deity. The faith posited that the goddess bestowed onto people the roles they must fulfill and the fates they must abide by. All souls were born into their families for the sake of fulfilling these roles. As a result, citizens of the Holy Theocracy could not choose their own profession, and one’s household was seen as the most important factor in marriages. Therefore, those who are selected to become priests, lawmakers, governing leaders and military leaders are likely to be predetermined by their birth. The nation does not share borders with the Republic or the Federacy and has developed an entirely different culture and language.

Regicide Fleet Countries[]

Main Article: Regicide Fleet Countries

The Regicide Fleet Countries is a federation of eleven small countries located east of the United Kingdom of Roa Gracia on the shores of the Northern Sea. Centuries ago, the Open Sea clans banded together under a unified purpose, to see that the sea would one day also be the domain of mankind. Since their formation, the Fleet Countries have dedicated their all in hunting the Leviathans. The Fleet Countries prided itself on its advanced navy equipped to hunt the Leviathans. While their ground forces were nothing of note compared to their neighbors Giad and Roa Gracia, Regicide arguably held the strongest navy on the Western Continent prior to the Legion war. Regicide's navy was comprised of eleven separate fleets each controlled by one of their constituent nations.

As their military focus was elsewhere, Regicide was unprepared for the threat of the Legion. In order to survive, they had to evacuate and turn the entirety of one of their constituent nations—the Cleo Fleet Country—into a bulwark against the Legion. The eleven fleets had also sustained enough damage where they could no longer operate independently. Thus, all vessels were gathered under the banner of Regicide's integrated navy. One such fleet maintained in the integrated navy was the Orphan Fleet. Prior to the Legion War, Regicide depended on the Giadan Empire financially to build their fleets in exchange for data collected at sea as the fleet countries themselves weren't well off economically.
