The Alliance of Wald (ヴァルト盟約同盟, Varuto Meiyaku Doumei?), shortened to the Alliance, is the setting for Mist.
The Alliance is a group of states located along the peaks of the continent's southern mountains. Its capital is Capella.
Culture[]
Flag[]
Their national symbol is an axe-bearing mountain goat.
Cuisine[]
The Alliance prefers coffee over tea as their hot beverage of choice.[2]
Ethnicities[]
Owing to the multiple countries between the mountains that constituted the Alliance, there are several ethnic groups that composed the nation's population. The largest of them are the blue-eyed Caerulea.[2]
Language[]
Wald's national language is what would be considered modern English (although it is unknown if they call the language by that name), much like the rest of the continent. While they speak the same language as San Magnolia, Giad, and Roa Gracia, there are dialectal differences between the nations.[3]
Chronology[]
Seven hundred years ago, it had gained independence from the Giadian Empire.[2]
The Strike Package's 1st Armored Group visited the alliance after their operation in the United Kingdom, the officially stated purpose of a joint interrogation of the Merciless Queen was merely a guise for the unit's R&R.
Foreign Relations[]
The Alliance was a nation that practiced armed neutrality, the sole exception was when it came to fighting the Legion, a common enemy to all of humanity.[4]
Federal Republic of Giad[]
They remain neutral with the Federacy, but support their endeavors against the Legion through the Eighty-Sixth Strike Package. As compensation for letting the Alliance take part in the interrogation of Zelene Birkenbaum despite their absence in her capture operation, as well as for all of the information and technology they have received from the Federacy and the United Kingdom, the Alliance was tasked with developing the Armée Furieuse and training the Strike Package in its use.[4]
Republic of San Magnolia[]
They remain neutral with the Republic, however, they have their own opinions about them. Lieutenant General Bel Aegis describes the nation vile, and they couldn't treat them too coldly because they might yield to the mad country in the far west.[4] She hopes the Republic would reflect on their foolishness for neglecting to collect their dead from the battlefield or sending their most superior soldiers deep into Legion territory.[1]
After the large-scale offensive, the Alliance and the two other countries agreed that abandoning the Republic after they had acknowledged them as survivors would be inhumane.[5]
United Kingdom of Roa Gracia[]
They remain neutral with the United Kingdom.[4] They wanted the United Kingdom to share the Legion´s tactical algorithm as the United Kingdom developed the Mariana Model, upon which the Legion´s artificial intelligence was based.[1]
Military[]
Ever since the Alliance’s founding, it had upheld a policy of universal conscription, and so men and women alike were conscripted. Their nature as staunch advocates of armed neutrality hadn’t changed at all.[1]
The Alliance was the first nation to develop and deploy the polypedal armored weapons known as the Feldreß.[1][2] Years ago, this state’s mountain denizens used these weapons to stave off fifteen tank divisions sent by the Empire. And they remained stalwart even when faced with the threat of the Legion.[2]
The Alliance's mountainous geography provides a significant advantage against the forces of the Legion, as most units are either too unwieldy to scale the steep cliffs, or too light to pose a threat. Pillboxes are scattered throughout the mountain range to provide support or hold the line until the main force sortied. The Alliance's military consists of exoskeleton armored infantry and the highly mobile Mk. 6 Stollenwurm; capable of swiftly traversing the mountainous terrain.
They developed an anti-radar weapon that forms clouds of metal-foil particles that blind the Rabe and the Ameise and disrupt the Legion’s communications.[5] They also developed the Mk. 1 Armée Furieuse based on the Legion's Zentaur.[6]
Government[]
Oligarchy[]
As the nation had split off from the Giadian Empire, they opted to forgo a monarch. Instead, they formed a council of influential figures from each of the Alliance's states.[2]
Democracy[]
One hundred and sixty years ago, the Alliance granted its citizens voting rights, shifting their council from an oligarchical position to a democratic one.[2]
Locations[]
Capella[]
Capella is the capital of the Alliance.
Hesturn[]
Hesturn is the second capital of the Alliance.[2]
Trivia[]
- The history, geography, and government of the Alliance of Wald follows closely with the Swiss Confederation.
- They were both originally a collection of states or cantons governed by nobles inside a larger empire (Giadian Empire & Holy Roman Empire respectively). They then managed to gain their independence from their empires, became recognized for their armed neutrality, and transitioned into a democratic system of government.
- Wald and Switzerland are both mountainous and located south of the empires they were originally part of.
- ヴァルト盟約同盟 literally translates to "Wald Oath Alliance". Similarly, the German name of Switzerland—Schweizerische Eidgenossenschaft—translates to "Swiss Oath Alliance".
- The Alliance also appears to specialize in neural interface technology. The Alliance's Feldreß control systems were augmented by being directly linked to the Operator's nervous system through cords that were plugged into various points along the Operator's spinal column up to their neck. Their nerve-coupling system is also viable as a prosthesis option for those who have lost their limbs.[7][8]
